Supplements for Muscle Gain: A Beginner's Guide
By The EVΛFIT team. Published 18 August 2026.
Before any supplement, the three things that actually build muscle are training with progressive overload, eating enough total calories, and getting enough protein and sleep. Supplements close gaps around those fundamentals — they don't replace them, and no tub fixes a training plan or a diet that isn't working.
With that said, in order of how much evidence backs them: whey protein first, for closing the daily protein gap food alone often can't; creatine monohydrate second, for the small extra rep or two per set that compounds over months; and everything else a distant third, useful at the margins rather than foundational.
A mass gainer earns its place only if you've genuinely tried to eat more real food and still can't reach a calorie surplus — it's a tool for a specific, identifiable problem (not enough appetite or time to eat), not a default add-on for anyone trying to gain size.
Pre-workout is about training quality, not muscle growth directly — better energy and focus can mean a better session, which over time adds up, but it's the most skippable item on this list if your budget is tight.
BCAAs are the one to be most sceptical of if you're already eating enough whole protein and whey — the amino acids in a BCAA product are ones you're almost certainly already getting from your regular protein intake, so they add little on top of a diet that's already covering its bases.
Training toward this goal?
Build Muscle: Whey protein and creatine, the staples for people who lift.
Shop for Build MuscleSequence matters more than most people think: get consistent training and your protein number right first, for at least a month, before adding anything else. Layering five supplements onto an inconsistent gym habit or a protein intake that's still short of target wastes money on the wrong problem.
