Authenticity

Check it's genuine

Fake supplements are a real problem in Kenya. Here is how to check any tub, including ours, and the official checks the brands publish.

Where our stock comes from

  • Imported from Europe, straight from the manufacturer or a distributor they've verified. No grey market, no repacking.
  • Every tub arrives sealed. We check the seal, the batch number and the best-before date when each delivery lands.
  • Stored indoors, out of the sun and heat, until it goes out to you.

How to check any supplement

01

The seal

The foil or card seal under the lid should be intact and stuck down all the way round. Never use a tub whose seal is torn, loose or missing.

02

Batch number and dates

Every genuine product has a batch (LOT) number and a best-before date, printed cleanly by machine, not on a loose sticker. The made-on and best-before dates should fit the product's shelf life (usually two years for powders).

03

Print and spelling

Labels should be sharp, with no spelling mistakes, blurred logos or colours that look off. Compare yours with the photos on the brand's own website.

04

Powder and smell

Powder should be dry and free-flowing with the usual smell and taste. Clumps, a strange smell or a different colour from your last tub are reasons to stop and ask.

05

The price

A price far below what other trusted sellers charge is the most common sign of a fake. Genuine imported stock costs about the same everywhere.

06

Ask the brand

Any manufacturer can trace its own batch numbers. If you're unsure, email the brand's customer service with the batch number and best-before date.

Official checks from the brands

These brands publish their own way to check a product. For other brands, use the checks above and, if you are unsure, contact the brand with the batch number.

Optimum Nutrition

Packaging checklist from Optimum Nutrition

  1. Inner seal: a glossy white cardboard disc stuck to the top of the tub, untouched around the rim. Small venting marks on it are normal.
  2. Dates and batch code: printed in ink on the bottom or side of the tub. Powders have a 2-year shelf life, so the made-on and best-before dates should be two years apart.
  3. Tub base: tubs made in the UK and Europe have a round indentation on the bottom. US-made tubs have a mould line instead; both are normal.
  4. Neck band: Optimum Nutrition is phasing out the black neck band and gold hologram on Gold Standard tubs, so a tub without them can still be genuine.
Optimum Nutrition's authentication tips

MuscleTech

MuscleTech Verify app

  1. Download the free MuscleTech Verify app (Google Play or the App Store).
  2. Scan the holographic sticker, or type in the 10-character code printed on it just below the MuscleTech logo.
  3. Check that the brand, product and expiry date the app shows match what is printed on the bottom of your tub.

MuscleTech says some genuine products don't carry the hologram yet, so a missing sticker on its own doesn't mean a fake.

MuscleTech Verify

USN

USN online product check

  1. Find the LOT number (5 to 8 characters, usually on the back of a bag or the bottom of a tub) and the best-before month printed next to it.
  2. Enter them on USN's Verify Product page, with the QR code from the USN sticker if your pack has one.
  3. USN shows "Authentication Successful" for a genuine product. If it doesn't, USN's team reviews it and emails you.
